New Video from LABOR BEAT:
The looming layoffs of 600 Nabisco/Mondelez workers in Chicago was understood by the teachers union during its one day strike in April as a threat to the general community, and a big contingent of teachers marched over to the Nabisco plant to join the BCTGM in a rally. And on May 18, 2016 Nabisco workers from around the country held a loud protest in front of the Nabisco/Mondelez shareholders meeting in Lincolnshire, IL. Although the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers union is calling for a boycott of Nabisco products from Mexico, where the company is in the process of moving production, some speakers underlined that workers in other places shouldn’t be blamed, but elected officials instead whose policies allow runaway industries. The role of NAFTA in enabling the international race to the bottom is also discussed in an interview with Ron Baker, BCTGM’s Strategic Campaign Coordinator.
