Alliance for Retired Americans members have joined the AFL-CIO in a boycott of Mexican-made Oreos and other Mexican-made Nabisco products. The boycott is a result of Nabisco’s announcement last July that it would invest an additional $130 million in a Mexican plant rather than its American factory in Chicago.

As a result 600 workers in Chicago are losing their jobs, devastating families and the community. The union workers at the profitable Chicago Nabisco bakery who lost their jobs had been producing baked goods there for more than 50 years.

“Outsourcing manufacturing jobs that can sustain middle class families and provide a secure retirement is a concerning and growing trend,” said Robert Roach, Jr., President of the Alliance. “Our members are supporting the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers’ International Union (BCTGM) workers who are affected by Nabisco’s decision and telling their friends and neighbors to check the label before buying any Nabisco product.”

“The nationwide consumer boycott of Mexican-made Nabisco products is gaining steam every day,” said BCTGM International President David B. Durkee. “The BCTGM is proud to have the support of the Alliance for Retired Americans and its members across the country. This boycott is sending a loud and clear message to job-exporting companies like Nabisco that Americans have had enough outsourcing of good jobs; that we are tired of seeing the jobs of our friends and neighbors being shipped to Mexico and other low-wage countries.  We will beat these greedy corporations that like to call America home where it hits them the hardest, at the cash register.”

“The time has come for America to reinvest in our own communities,” declared IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Philip J. Gruber. “We must support American jobs.”
